Silly Saturday

Silly Saturday is dedicated to my pets. Since my son, S, was born four years ago my pets were my babies. Now they have taken a back burner in life. I will discuss all of the funny, gross, weird, etc. things that have happened in the last week with the pets. Right now I only have three pets, 2 dogs, PJ and Derby and one fat cat, Neezer.

This week is solely going to be dedicated to Derby and her great find this week!

Derby has had a very busy week and proved that Yorkies are varmint hunters.  Derby spent a good two days barking outside and I honestly thought she was barking at the deer statue in our neighbor’s yard.

I kept catching Derby on the top deck just barking.  I figured she was up there because that is the only way she can see outside the backyard.  After two days of barking outside from sun up till she had icicles hanging on her because of the cold weather I couldn’t take it anymore and asked B to check it out.  B thought for sure that a bird had built a nest under deck. When we went out to explore it nope, a SQUIRREL!

Once B discovered it was a squirrel, Derby was right there by his side trying to get at the squirrel.  Derby who is scared of the power drills and usually stays a good distance from them was right next to B when he was using it to unscrew the deck so she did not miss a thing.  That squirrel was just cackling away telling us what was up and Derby was giving it right back barking, whining, and digging at the deck.

I actually held Derby back when B lifted the board so she would not jump down and get bit by the squirrel.  Well we were unsuccessful in scaring the squirrel out; it just ran under another part of the deck on the ceiling below.  Derby kept chasing all around as it was running on the ceiling below.

B was able to clean out the leaves the squirrel was using to make his home and then we rinsed it down with water to try and keep the squirrel from coming back.  B blocked the decks so the dogs could not get up and scratch the deck any worse.  B has checked under the deck boards twice now and the squirrel has not returned.

I love that Derby found it and did not give up.  Since we got our first dog Pudge, and then Derby we used to teach them to chase squirrels out of our backyard.  Now that we have PJ and Derby they both still do it.  You just say the word squirrel and they are off barking and running for the backyard.  If we are in the front yard and they see a squirrel it is game on and they will take off on us.

  • Do they catch them?  They haven’t yet.
  • Do the squirrels tease them and throw nut shells and stuff at the dogs?  All the time.
  • Do we put peanuts and treats on the fence so the squirrels will come and get it and have the dogs chase the squirrels?  Yup, that is usually the highlight of our summer nights.  To sit and watch the dogs chase the squirrels and watch the squirrels try and sneak out to get the treats without the dogs seeing them.

How did Derby end her week and celebrating her big find?  She got a much needed bath!
